It is easy to fall in love with a design and forget that the material it is printed on matters just as much. The right finish affects how your wallpaper looks, how it feels to the touch, how easy it is to apply and how well it lasts. Here is what you need to know to choose well.

Peel-and-stick vs traditional

Peel-and-stick vinyls have a self-adhesive backing — you simply peel and apply directly to the wall. They are perfect for confident DIY, for renters (because they are removable) and for rooms you like to refresh often. Traditional paste-applied papers can offer a slightly more classic look and are often favoured for larger or professionally installed projects.

For most modern homes, a quality peel-and-stick vinyl strikes the best balance of ease, durability and finish.

Matte, satin and textured surfaces

The surface finish changes the whole character of a design. A smooth matte surface keeps fine detail sharp and reduces glare — ideal for intricate artwork and bright rooms. A subtle texture, such as a Venetian-stucco-inspired emboss, adds depth and a tactile sense of craft that flat surfaces cannot match. Textured finishes also help disguise minor wall imperfections.

Think about how each room is used. Bedrooms and formal lounges can take softer, more delicate finishes. High-traffic spaces — hallways, kitchens, family living rooms — benefit from a heavier, wipeable vinyl that shrugs off daily life and cleans easily. Durability and cleaning

Heavier vinyls (measured in microns and grams per square metre) are more robust and generally more wipeable. If you have children, pets or simply a busy household, leaning towards a more durable finish will pay off over time.
